This is a lovely Southern Song Dynasty, 12/13th century, small bowl with russet splashes and white rim from the Yonghe (Nanfeng?) kilns. It is: 10.1cm in diameter and 3.5cm high.It is made from a light clay.
The piece is in excellent condition, is high fired to a porcelaneous state with a bell like tone when tapped. There is some minute fritting at the edge of the splashes on the glaze which is typical of this ware; usually this is lacquered over, but this bowl is all original. It does show signs of wear through scratches.
The white rim possibly imitates a metal band, sometimes placed round bowls.
